With no significant shipments under the European Union’s quota 481 —for grainfed cattle— the United States became the main destination for chilled beef exported by Uruguay in September.
The North American country imported 1,172 tons, the largest monthly volume so far this year, at an average value of US$/t 13,173. Year-to-date, chilled beef exports to the U.S. rose 39% in volume and 22% in average value.
EU countries were the destination for 1,903 tons of chilled beef at an average value of US$/t 15,404, the highest since 2008. Europe’s import needs are evident not only in the growth of imported volume (up 43% year-on-year combining chilled and frozen beef) but also in a 9% increase in average import value.
