Carrefour and JBS join program to fight deforestation in Pará

Carrefour Brazil and meatpacker JBS announced that the two companies, along with packers Rio Maria and Mafrinorte, have joined a sustainable cattle program in Pará that promises to combat illegal deforestation in the state. The firms are the first to join the state program, which aims to implement individual traceability of Pará’s entire cattle herd by 2026—from birth to slaughter—the companies said in a press release. “The companies are committed to encouraging the production of traceable beef free from illegal deforestation,” Carrefour Brasil said in the statement.

The initiative also pledges to “inform consumers about the added value of traceable beef by highlighting its sustainable origin.” The retailer said sales of products in Pará carrying the program’s certification will begin in the second half of the year, but gave no details, Forbes Brasil reported.
