Industry share in the Type Steer drops to its lowest level in two years
The National Meat Institute (INAC) released the monthly Type Steer 2.0 report. The Industrial Added Value (IAV) — which includes industry costs and profits — reached its lowest percentage share since June 2023, while the cattle component recorded its highest value since September 2022.
The value of the Type Steer (TS) in June stood at US$ 1,715 per head, representing a 0.2% decrease compared to the previous month. This slight drop was attributed to a decline in the export basket (in dollars) as well as in offal, by-products, and fresh hides. In contrast, there was an increase in the value of carcasses destined for the domestic market.
Following the US$ 1,719 TS value recorded in May, this marks the second-highest reference level since September 2022.
Composition of the TS
In June, the indicator’s composition placed the value of cattle at US$ 1,379 per head, with a monthly increase of 4.9%. Conversely, the IAV fell by US$ 68, settling at US$ 336 per animal. As a result, the share of cattle (raw material) stood at 80%, while the industrial component dropped to 20%.
According to INAC records, the cattle value reached in June is the highest since September 2022, when it was US$ 1,446 per steer. Meanwhile, the IAV marked its lowest level since July 2023, when it was US$ 328.
Cumulative 2025
For the January–June 2025 period, the average TS value stood at US$ 1,668 per animal, with a percentage breakdown of 76% for cattle and 24% for the IAV. These figures are like those observed in the same period of 2023, when the shares were 77% for cattle and 23% for the IAV, although the absolute values were lower.
Two years ago, the TS averaged US$ 1,512 per head in the first six months, while last year it stood at US$ 1,455, representing differences of -US$ 156 and -US$ 213, respectively, compared to the 2025 cumulative figure.
