Paraguayan President Santiago Peña called for his country to be granted an exclusive quota for beef exports to the United States. In an interview with Bloomberg Television, he said Paraguayan shipments were increasing but noted that they currently compete under the “other countries” quota, in which Brazil accounts for a large share of the volume due to its greater scale.
In August, the United States opened an additional 300,000-ton quota for lean beef under this category, divided into three monthly windows of 100,000 tons from September through November and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The U.S. government had previously granted Argentina an exclusive additional quota of 80,000 tons for 2026.
Peña said a country-specific allocation would allow Paraguay to compete under better conditions and consolidate its position in a market where reduced domestic supplies and high prices are driving stronger demand for imported beef. The United States opened its market to Paraguayan beef in late 2023.
