“It is a highly relevant milestone and a major endorsement that President Yamandú Orsi, before completing his first year in office, travels to China with one of the largest delegations since diplomatic relations began,” said Gastón Scayola, head of INAC.
China is an “extremely relevant” market that deserves “special attention,” Scayola said, noting that Uruguay is “one of the major players” there. He highlighted Orsi’s participation as providing “new momentum” to efforts to expand trade with a market of “enormous potential and an excellent relationship.”
Scayola cited the safeguard regime as an example of successful negotiations: “If we look at the results, Uruguay obtained a significantly larger quota (324,000 tons) than it had been exporting—something that did not happen for Brazil, Argentina, Australia or the United States. Uruguay played an important match and achieved a fitting result.”
During the visit, Uruguay’s beef promotion campaign will be launched at events attended by President Orsi, the official delegation and business representatives, with presentations in Beijing and Shanghai.
INAC will also sign a technical cooperation memorandum of understanding with an organization made up of former Chinese sanitary authorities, aimed at strengthening meat safety and sanitary compliance.
