Defying almost all forecasts, Javier Milei’s government achieved a resounding victory in Argentina’s legislative elections last Sunday. Although just over 66% of the electorate voted — the lowest turnout since the return of democracy in 1983 — the result brought a sense of calm and optimism overall. Politically, it was reinforced by a remarkable shift in tone: Milei delivered his post-election speech in a suit and tie, appearing calm, grateful and conciliatory, acknowledging the contributions of several leaders — including former president Mauricio Macri — and inviting part of the opposition he had previously insulted to join forces.
