Delayed supply boosted cattle slaughter in June in Mato Grosso
The prolonged rainy season caused a delayed supply of seasonal animals in the state of Mato Grosso, leading to an increase in slaughter during June 2025, according to Imea.
In June 2025, Mato Grosso sent 613.15 thousand head of cattle to slaughterhouses, a volume very similar to that of May 2025, with a slight monthly increase of 0.20%. This was the highest number of cattle slaughtered in any June on record.
The number of females sent to slaughter, which had declined year-on-year during the first months of the year, increased again. As a result, the number of cows and heifers slaughtered in June 2025 was 8.11% higher than in June 2024. However, despite this rise, the slaughter of males also increased significantly, which caused the share of females to drop by 1.74 percentage points from the previous month, averaging 52.66%. In June 294 thousand males were slaughtered, 15 thousand more than in May.
According to Imea, “the outlook for the coming months is for an increase in cattle supply from grainfed finishing systems, and a decrease in cow and heifer slaughter, reducing the share of females.”
