UK to implement mandatory electronic cattle ID
The UK government will introduce a mandatory electronic identification (EID) system for cattle in England as part of its new "Livestock Information Service" platform. The goal is to enhance traceability, disease control, and trade efficiency. The new system will gradually replace the current visual ID system, with implementation expected to begin in late 2025.
Unlike the traditional method based on written records and printed ear tags, the new regulation will require electronic devices that allow faster and more accurate data reading for each animal. Producers, veterinarians, and supply chain operators will be able to digitally upload and access this information, improving the quality and flow of health and trade data.
While the farming sector has welcomed the move, concerns remain about implementation costs and the time needed for adaptation. Authorities and industry bodies see the digital system as a significant step forward in biosecurity and administrative efficiency, aligning the UK with practices already adopted in countries like Australia and New Zealand.
