Pig inventory fell 22% in Germany over the past decade
According to a press release from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), preliminary results show that as of November 3, 2025 there were 15,220 pig farms in Germany. This represents a 2.7% decline (430 farms) compared with the previous year.
The clear downward trend continues. Compared with 10 years ago, the number of farms fell by 40.8%, or about 10,500 units. The number of farm closures remains particularly high in piglet production. Compared with 2015, nearly half of sow producers (49.9%) have ceased operations.
The number of pigs raised in Germany stood at 21.5 million as of November 3, 2025. This represents a slight increase of 0.9%, or 196,300 animals, compared with the previous year.
However, compared with 2015, there has been a significant decline: over the past 10 years, the pig population has decreased by 22.3%, or 6.2 million animals.
