Romania plans major investment to reverse livestock herd decline
Romania’s Ministry of Agriculture announced the launch of a strategic plan to revive the country’s livestock herd and ease the severe supply crisis affecting the domestic meat industry.
According to Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu, the government is preparing an aid package of between €150 million and €200 million, funded through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), aimed at purchasing high-quality breeding animals.
The program, which could begin in March 2026 once agreed with the sector, will prioritize the acquisition of beef and dairy heifers, ewe lambs, and especially around 100,000 sows to rebuild a pork sector severely hit by African swine fever.
With this investment, the government aims to strengthen the productive base to ensure the economic viability of the entire meat value chain in the country, Eurocarne reported.
