Office of the United States Trade Representative seals Taiwan deal boosting red meat access
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced the signing of an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade between the United States and Taiwan, delivering significant market access gains for US red meat.
According to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), the agreement removes tariffs and addresses non-tariff barriers affecting US beef. Taiwan is the fifth-largest market for US beef, with exports valued at approximately US$ 650 million, and the US remains Taiwan’s leading beef supplier. Expanded access is expected to support further growth across all beef products, including cuts popular in yakiniku barbecue and burger segments.
US pork has faced strong competition in Taiwan, where the EU and Canada dominate imports. USMEF believes that reducing tariffs and regulatory barriers will help expand US pork exports while continuing efforts to rebuild consumer confidence in the Taiwanese market.
The agreement also clarifies market access for US bison and eliminates tariffs on US lamb. Industry representatives welcomed the continued focus on reducing barriers for US agricultural exports and expressed confidence in the successful implementation of the Taiwan agreement.
