Delegations from Latin America and Spain met in Madrid to discuss sanitary controls and maximum residue limits (MRLs) applied to food exports destined for the European Union. The meetings took place between May 18 and 22 under a cooperation program between the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) and CAF.
Representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay participated in the event. Uruguay was represented by officials from the MGAP’s General Directorate of Livestock Services (DGSG) and DILAVE.
The main focus was technical exchange on official control systems, risk assessment and sanitary coordination to comply with European requirements, amid growing EU attention on residues and traceability in imported food products.
Delegations presented their national food safety systems and the tools used to ensure compliance with export sanitary requirements. The agenda also included technical visits to the Regional Public Health Laboratory of Madrid and the Border Control Post at Madrid-Barajas Airport, where participants observed inspection and control procedures applied to goods entering the European Union.
The event coincided with AESAN’s international conference marking its 25th anniversary, focused on the role of science, cooperation and risk assessment in strengthening food safety.
