Cargill to close Wisconsin beef plant, eliminating 221 jobs
Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation announced the permanent closure of its processing unit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a decision that will result in the elimination of approximately 221 jobs.
According to a company spokesperson, the closure is aimed at better aligning the portfolio with current customer demand and prioritizing strategic investments. Ground beef production volume will be transferred to other North American cattle plants, including the Butler facility, also in Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee plant specializes in hamburgers, blocks and “chub”-style ground beef products. The facility became part of the group following the acquisition of Emmpak Foods Inc. in 2001.
According to the official WARN notice, production is expected to stop around April 17, with full closure planned for the end of May. Layoffs will be carried out in stages, with the first terminations scheduled for April 11.
The company indicated that affected workers will be able to apply for openings at other facilities and that those leaving the company due to the closure will receive a severance package.
