Bamidal resumes sheep slaughter in the first week of June
After three months of inactivity, the sheep processing plant Bamidal (Sidercol) will resume operations in the first week of June. The announcement was made by Bamidal’s general manager, Sebastián Juanena, in an interview with Radio Paso de los Toros. The plant’s last slaughter took place in mid-February, as the company was forced to file for voluntary creditor protection due to the bankruptcy of Conexión Ganadera.
The court-appointed trustee, Alfredo Ciavatone, is currently overseeing the plant alongside management. The initial plan is to process 1,800 head per week, with payments made in cash. “The number of slaughter days will depend on livestock availability. Our break-even point would be three slaughter sessions of 900 animals each,” Juanena explained. The goal is to keep operations running in order to attract a potential investor who could take over the plant's assets in the future.
Despite being inactive for a full quarter, Bamidal still ranks fourth in Uruguay’s 2025 sheep slaughter rankings, with a 6.2% market share and 15,180 head processed so far this year.
