ABS confirms record Australian beef production in 2025
New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirms that 2025 was a record year for Australia’s beef sector, with annual production reaching 2.87 million tons, up 12% year-on-year. Cattle slaughter totaled 9.28 million head, also 12% higher than 2024 and the highest since 1978. Average carcase weights reached 309 kg for the year, supported by favorable northern pasture conditions.
Lamb slaughter declined 7% to 24.6 million head but remained the third-highest on record. Annual lamb production reached 597,068 tons, down 5.2%, with stable carcass weights averaging 24.3 kg. Heavier weights across all states helped offset lower slaughter, reflecting improved feeding strategies.
Mutton slaughter totaled 10.19 million head in 2025, down 14% from 2024 but still historically elevated. Production reached 258,757 tons, 13% lower year-on-year, while Q4 carcass weights averaged 27 kg, 5% above the five-year average.
According to Meat & Livestock Australia, the data highlights the resilience of Australian producers, with strong throughput and sustained supply levels despite mixed seasonal conditions.
