Australia reaches 50% of China safeguard quota in just 12 weeks
Australian beef imports into China have reached 50% of their annual safeguard quota for 2026 as of March 26, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce of China.
The pace is running well ahead of last year, with the halfway mark reached in just 85 days. Australia’s industry is familiar with triggering the Special Agricultural Safeguard (SSG), and this would mark the seventh time the mechanism is activated once the threshold is fully met.
The rapid drawdown supports market reports of a strong “dash for the door” by exporters seeking to ship product before the additional 55% levy effectively shuts the trade window.
Once the quota is fully utilized, the safeguard tariff will be applied to all Australian beef from the third day after the trigger. In previous years, the safeguard was typically reached in the third or fourth quarter. With half of the quota already filled by late March, market participants now expect Australia to hit 100% utilization as early as late May or June. This compares with July 25 in 2025 and October 6 in 2024.
