Germany: meat consumption rises by 1.4 kg per capita in 2025
Meat consumption in Germany reached 54.9 kg per capita in 2025, up 1.4 kg from the previous year, according to BZL estimates. The increase was mainly driven by poultry, which hit a record of close to 15 kg per person.
Despite the rebound after three years of decline, consumption remains below historical levels such as those seen in 2011. Pork continues to dominate, while beef recorded a slight increase.
In contrast, total meat production fell by 0.3% to 7.3 million tons, largely due to lower cattle slaughter, which led to a 6% drop in beef output. Poultry production remained broadly stable, while pork production rose by 1.1%.
To meet stronger demand, imports increased by nearly 11%, with a notable rise in beef. As a result, the self-sufficiency rate declined by 4.5 percentage points to 114.6%, with beef falling below 100% for the first time.
