Mapa sets timeline for traceability
On Wednesday the 23rd, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) published Ordinance SDA/Mapa No. 1,331/2025, establishing the implementation schedule for the National Program for the Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes (PNIB). The goal is to achieve mandatory traceability for Brazil’s entire cattle herd by 2033. The first stage, starting July 1, 2025, calls for the development of the federal IT system and a centralized database for real-time management and consultation.
By December 31, 2026, state-level animal health agencies must integrate their systems with PNIB.
From January 2027 through December 2029, a transitional phase with voluntary participation will take place, covering animals under health control or approved protocols. During this period, the movement of unidentified animals will still be allowed.
Between 2030 and 2032, there will be a progressive expansion until January 1, 2033, when all animals must be identified and registered, and movement outside the standard will be prohibited. States may advance the schedule if they complete the first two stages earlier.
The Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), which is part of PNIB’s Traceability Management Council, said it took part in technical discussions and supports the program as a tool to expand markets and add value to livestock production, according to Pecuaria.
