A decision excluding bovine leather from the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on September 17, bringing years of lobbying by Brazil’s tanning industry before European authorities to a close.
The EU published Delegated Regulation 2026/2102, which formally removes bovine hides and skins at all stages of processing from the scope of the EUDR.
The exclusion covers tariff codes 4101, 4104 and 4107 and took effect on September 18. The Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) said the measure was the result of years of joint work with the Brazilian Leather project and its members.
“Brazil’s leather industry has taken part in countless initiatives, discussions and projects toward this goal in recent years, and sees the formal removal of leather from the regulation as a milestone for the sector,” the organization said.
