Cattle slaughter posted a sharp weekly decline at the end of May. According to data released by INAC, 38,206 head were processed in the week ended May 30, down 12% from the previous week. It should be noted that slaughter activity was reduced by one day due to the Meat Industry Workers’ Day holiday.
Steers recorded the largest decline, with slaughter falling 20% to 19,686 head. Heifer slaughter decreased 3.5% to 5,122 head, while cow slaughter eased 0.6% to 12,815 head.
As a result, May cattle slaughter totaled 171,565 head, down 21.2% from the 223,124 head processed in the same month last year.
For the January-May period, total cattle slaughter reached 836,143 head, a decline of 18.6% compared with the same period in 2025.
The most active plants during the final week of May were Tacuarembó-MBRF with 4,474 head, followed by Las Piedras with 3,529 head and San Jacinto with 3,412 head.
