A decree signed by President Yamandú Orsi and Agriculture Minister Alfredo Fratti updates the regulatory framework for the detection and control of “veterinary drug residues, pesticides and environmental contaminants” in products of animal origin.
The new decree authorizes the MGAP to carry out “preventive sanitary interdictions, inspections and sampling” in animals, products and byproducts of animal origin, feed, forage and veterinary products.
It also empowers the ministry to carry out the “total seizure of unauthorized or unregistered products.”
The regulations apply to livestock farms, slaughter plants and processors of animal-origin products.
One of the most relevant changes is the responsibility assigned to the owner or holder of animals with positive test results. According to the decree, that person will be responsible both for “the non-compliance detected” and for implementing the “corrective and preventive actions” ordered by the authorities under official supervision.
Farms where prohibited compounds or residue levels above permitted limits are detected may be placed under preventive restrictions on the movement of animals destined for slaughter.
