The Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso approved last Wednesday, in two voting rounds, the law creating a state-level socio-environmental traceability system for the entire bovine and buffalo herd. The mechanism will allow the monitoring of the beef chain from birth to slaughter, using criteria that certify the origin and production conditions of each farm.
The model was developed by the Instituto Mato-grossense da Carne (Imac) together with the state government and the production sector and will be implemented gradually starting in January 2026. The law provides technical support for producers of all sizes, with a phased entry into the system.
The policy incorporates guidelines such as continuous monitoring, verification of socio-environmental compliance, expanded access to markets that require traceability, promotion of public–private partnerships, and recognition of environmental services. The goal is to standardize requirements to strengthen the competitiveness of the entire chain.
According to Imac, the system responds to growing demands from Europe and Asia for proof of origin and deforestation-free production. “With the approval and its transformation into public policy, the program should gain speed,” said the institute’s president, Caio Penido. Source: Globo Rural
