Rising finished cattle prices in Brazil are improving the relationship between feeder cattle purchase costs and revenue from finished cattle sales, making feedlot finishing more attractive.
According to an analysis by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea), based on data through October 20, finished cattle prices rose more sharply than feeder cattle prices, narrowing the differential between the two categories compared with September.
The trend eases one of the pressures on feedlot economics. Since early 2026, tighter feeder cattle availability has pushed prices higher, increasing the cost of placing new batches of cattle on feed.
Improved sales prospects could also encourage further feeder cattle purchases. On São Paulo’s B3 exchange, contracts from November through February have risen above R/@ 400, a premium of more than R$ 10 over the spot benchmark.
The increase coincides with the final stage of the second annual feedlot cycle, when cattle are typically placed on feed between July and September, with slaughter concentrated in October and November. The current improvement therefore benefits cattle already on feed and could encourage additional placements at operations that remain active toward year-end.
